What C900 is

C900 is PVC pressure pipe made to the AWWA C900 standard. It's used for potable water mains and fire lines. The DR number tells you the wall thickness and pressure class. See our pipe spec guide for the ratings.

Sewer pipe (SDR 26 and SDR 35)

SDR 26 vs SDR 35

Both are PVC gravity sewer pipe. SDR 26 has a thicker wall and higher stiffness than SDR 35. See our pipe spec guide for the numbers.

City of Houston notes

The City of Houston 2026 Infrastructure Design Manual says:

Outside drops at manholes are built of SDR 26 PVC (ASTM D 3034) (§8.2.01.J.2.f.(4)(b)).
SDR 35 PVC is not allowed for public sewers near Metro guided rapid transit tracks (§8.2.01.L.1.e).

Ductile iron and MJ fittings

What MJ fittings are

Mechanical joint (MJ) fittings join pipe with a gland, gasket and bolts. C900 is made in ductile iron outside-diameter sizes, so ductile iron MJ fittings fit it.

MJ vs flanged

MJ fittings are the usual choice for buried pipe. Flanged fittings bolt flat face to face and are used mostly in above-ground and vault work.

For restrained-joint direct bury, the 2026 IDM (§7.2.01.C) calls for AWWA C900 DR 18 for PVC restrained joints, 250 psi AWWA C900 DR 14 for vertical offsets, epoxy lined and coated ductile iron restrained fittings, and products on the OCE approved products list.
